Welcome from the Head

Veronica_Welcome.jpg

Dolphin School is a coeducational, independent, preparatory day school and  Nursery for children between the ages of 3 and 13. We have around 270 children with typically two classes of around sixteen children in each year group.

Situated in the rural Berkshire village of Hurst, just off the A4 between Reading and Maidenhead, Dolphin School offers a 'hands-on' approach to learning, high academic standards and a unique field and walking trip programme both at home and abroad which takes education beyond the classroom and brings it to life. A look at our Image Gallery will give you a flavour of what Dolphin children experience.

Dolphin is a place bustling with happy, purposeful young people. At the heart of our ethos is a child-centred approach which ensures that individuality is both celebrated and encouraged. Children are relaxed, comfortable and keen to learn in an atmosphere that is filled with warmth, energy and enthusiasm. Expectations are high and children thrive on the many challenges offered at Dolphin both inside and beyond the classroom.

I am proud to lead a team of highly qualified, dedicated staff who care passionately about education. They aim to inspire the young minds in our care, helping them to become sensitive, independent thinking, well balanced young people with the skills and desire to make a difference to the world. Children are able to flourish in small classes and from the age of seven benefit from the careful guidance of subject specialist teachers.

The only way to truly appreciate what Dolphin has to offer is to meet our children and staff so I would invite you to join one of our regular tours where you will have the opportunity to observe some lessons and find out more about our philosophy.

Dolphin delivers a colourful and challenging curriculum and each year our children win major scholarships to leading independent senior schools and places at prestigious grammar schools. Children leave Dolphin with confidence in themselves, a strong sense of individualism, at least one area in which they can feel pride in their own achievement and a strong sense of curiosity and enjoyment in learning.

I hope that you are inspired to learn more about Dolphin. I would be delighted to show you around.

Veronica Gibbs, Head

Open Days and Tours

Tours to see the school in action are available every day of the week during term time. This is without a doubt the best way to fully appreciate what Dolphin has to offer. You will visit numerous classrooms, see the children at work and hear about the philosophy and teaching methods adopted within the school. To you would like a tour, please call our Registrar, Jan Vernon, on 0118 934 1277 to arrange a convenient time.

An Extended Family
Dolphin is a small school of just under 300 children. Consequently the staff know each child very well and the children cooperate happily and look out for each other across the year groups. Problems, real and perceived, are treated seriously and action taken. The happiness of the individual child is of paramount importance and we have a strong pastoral structure.

Staff Details
At Dolphin our greatest resource is our highly qualified and dedicated staff. They are innovative and flexible and enjoy the challenge of teaching able children. They stay abreast of current trends in the teaching profession and of developments in their specialist fields. Although subject specialist teaching begins at the age of six, there is an extremely high degree of integration between departments and no subject is taught in isolation. There is a detailed integrated studies programme and the field trips are at the centre of our cross curricular initiatives from Year Three. For details of all our staff, their qualifications and subjects taught, please read more.
